Flexible gooseneck mics are not new , but Sennheiser ’ s e608 brings some new ideas to the format . First , the e608 is a dynamic rather than a condenser microphone . Short gooseneck mics with attachment clamps are used to close-mic string , woodwind and brass orchestral instruments and tend to use a back electret condenser element in order to increase sensitivity and transient response .
However , a good case can be made for dynamics in this scenario , especially when the orchestra is socially distanced as is the case now . The dynamic element ’ s reduced sphere of pick-up and slower transience makes for a more focused and isolated tone . Second , the e608 is built from fiberglass instead of metal , making it lighter and more apt to stay on the instrument . Third , its hum compensating coil , low sensitivity to structural movement and high SPL rating make it useful to capture everything from French horns to tympani without picking up mechanical noise or distorting the element .
Finally , the e608 is both affordable ($ 179 ) and great sounding ; a rather rare combination in the world of orchestral mics . It mounts easily to almost any instrument , has a ruggedized cable to prevent damage by musicians and sports a matte finish perfect for intense stage lighting . If you need one or twenty orchestra mics , the Sennheiser e608 should be at the top of your list .
