CUT CAPO
“ SUCH AN AWESOME GOD ” BY MAVERICK CITY | Mitch Bohannon
Some chord progressions in worship are like comfort foods to me . Seriously , it ’ s like grits , eggs , and sausage in the morning ... it just feels like home when I am worshiping over a 1 , 5 , 6m , 4 progression . I think that ’ s why when I heard “ Such an Awesome God ” for the first time , it felt like I knew it already .
As a worship leader , that ’ s really how I want the congregation to feel . Comfortable ... like home . I ’ ve read on Facebook ( probably all of us have ) complaints about worship writing not being complex enough or sounding too familiar . However , in my opinion , we can add plenty of nuances of complexity while staying close to home . Congregations can easily get lost or left behind when the band gets overly complex . We need to remember that the goal is participation ... singing !
Such an awesome God . So Mighty , So Holy , So Wonderful . I could seriously loop that chorus all day . In fact , I was still singing it each time I woke up last night !
One of the beauties of the 1 , 5 , 6m , 4 progression ( in the key of “ E ” that would be E , B , C # m , A ) is that with several other songs sharing this progression , it ’ s really easy to tag or flow into other songs . I recently watched an online prayer service at my daughter and son-in-law ’ s church , New Life Church Corpus Christi , where the instruments pretty much stayed within the same progression throughout the service . The service then flowed between singing and prayer over that progression . It was a really great service and the focus stayed where it was intended … on communicating with the Lord .
Bottom line , I love this song ! I could see it fitting anywhere in a service . It has enough dynamic power to work at the start of a service and has enough focus to fit at the end or even at the response time .
The song is recorded in the key of “ F .” I would lead the song in the key of “ G ” ( full capo on fret 3 | cut capo on fret 5 … to play with the recording , drop the capos down to 1 and 3 ), so the progression is G , D / F #, Em , C . The cut capo makes the song super easy to play both fingerstyle and strumming with power . It also leaves the melody easily accessible if you want to add that in . The tempo is at 67 , so I ’ ll use an 8 th note click track .
In the video , you ’ ll see the melody line at the intro as well as the beginning of each verse . I also tagged the bridge from “ Alabaster Jar ” which is in the same key with the same progression . You ’ ll notice that I ’ m not playing the 5 th string in the “ C ” chord . I am muting that string with my 2 nd finger while holding the 6 th string . This separates the bass note from the rest of the chord and makes it sound cleaner . This song is full of dynamic options where you can build up and bring back down in several different spots .
Take a listen and worship !
