The Chorus is a magnificent new project from The Belonging Co, packed with worship songs that are reproducible for churches everywhere.
[ Natalie ] How are you doing?
[ Alex ] I’ m doing great, thank you. The last time you and I talked was for your Christmas album. It was back in early December of last year. I’ m so glad that you’ re here today! And Andrew, we’ ve not met before, so this is indeed a nice treat to visit with you and Natalie. So, let’ s start off with the new project, The Chorus. Tell us about the past Belonging Co. conference and the recording.
[ Andrew ] Well, we did record this at our conference last September. We had historically done recordings at conferences, but we had stopped doing that for a couple years. So, we came back to doing a conference and it was just a powerful night. I think we all knew these songs were special because we had done these songs a lot in our church leading up to the conference and it just felt like,” Man, people are really responding to these songs in a unique way.” Our church responded. I mean, that’ s kind of really where we start out writing every time is like, let’ s write for our church. What’ s God doing in our house? And we had a group of songs that we’ d been singing at church that felt incredible and our church was loving and responding to.
We were really excited and expected to go into conference and lead them and record them. And so yeah, it’ s pretty awesome. Everything you see from the videos, and everything came from that conference last September.
[ Natalie ] I think too, one of the amazing things is that conference is always special. Obviously, it’ s special in the sense that it’ s not like there’ s some sort of magic potion. It’ s just I think when God’ s people say,“ I’ m going to actually set time aside specifically.” It’ s not more about what God does. It’ s more about how we position our hearts. And so, conference is always very special, but I will say it doesn’ t feel any more special than what we experience on any given Sunday. And I think that’ s the part for me that I’ ve always loved about The Belonging Co is that what is captured isn’ t something that we’ re trying to make seem epic or make seem special or make seem extra. It’ s just kind of what we do and really, truly who God is on a regular basis in our fellowship and then we just get to capture it. And I think that for me is always the extra special thing.
[ WM ] That’ s great. I love that. And so, Natalie, the song,“ There is No One.” brought me to tears. When the congregation answered you, « There is no one.» Tell us about that song.
[ Natalie ] A lot of the songs on this particular record were written by Andrew, Mitch Wong and Austin Davis. And again, they took time and set time aside. It’ s amazing what God does when we decide to set time aside, but they set this time aside and went off and wrote songs together. Andrew, is this one of the ones you wrote?
