the guitar’ s tone on its own – not amplified yet. The thin semi-hollow body resonates well and adds more girth / volume of course than you get with a solid body electric.
If you are used to a wider body than your regular Strat or Tele shape, than this SH35 will be easy to get up and go right out of the box. If not, then it will take a little getting used to. All though, all the while you will be enjoying the rich tone that this wide body guitar provides.
Plugged in: For this test drive I am using my late 60’ s Gibson Falcon tube amp with a beautiful natural spring reverb and tremolo. I put on my favorite guitar strap and immediately the guitar felt balanced and close to my body. The thin body sits closer to your own body for less play fatigue.
I ran the same rhythm chord progression first through all the pick-up selections and then ran the same riffs through those three positions. The double humbuckers were warm, round and full of harmonic detail. I was trying to figure out which position sounded best to me, but it was hard as each one has their own merits. Each could have applications for different styles and needed tones. I usually like the middle position most and just when I thought the bridge setting was too bright, I rolled off the tone knob some and there it was – a really sweet tone.
The more I played the more this guitar won me
over. When I was wrapping up, I hit the reverb footswitch pedal to my amp and soaked in the semi-hollow tones swamped with heavy reverb. Ah, that was special!
The Looks: The translucent red flame maple top wins the day. The block inlays and bound neck make this guitar look far more expensive than it is.
The Price: $ 999.00. Made in Indonesia. Gig bag sold separately.
One Recommendation: I would have two guitar straps handy. When sitting on my couch the wide body is a bit bottom heavy so a shortened strap would even that out. When playing standing I used my regular strap and it felt solid.
The Wrap: Washburn is pulling out all the stops on this SH35 guitar. Dollar for dollar a big win for you, as it will bring several unique voices to your collection.
