We had planned for Michael W. Smith to be a part of our recent Worship Leader BUYER’ S GUIDE # 14( https:// joom. ag / okKd) but the timing just didn’ t fall right. However, we did capture his answers to our regular questions, plus added one also about his impacting worship song that is garnering more and more attention. Let’ s catch up a little with Smitty.
[ Bruce Adolph ] The song“ Hymn For Communion” has a dual message … A celebration of communion as well as an invitation to come to the Lord. Tell us about it
[ Michael W. Smith ] I have always wanted to write a song about communion. And then as I was collaborating with my co-writer Michael Olson, we gave it some thought about making this not only about communion but making it invitational as well.
[ WM ] You have had a few songs that have left an incredible mark on modern Christian music …“ Friends Are Friends Forever”,“ Agnus Dei”,“ Place in This World” and several others but because this one speaks to both communion and outreach – those are two things that will remain part of the gospel story long after we are both gone … This“ Hymn for Communion” song will stay relevant year in and year out. What are your thoughts here as you have seen this song in action?
[ Michael ] The story is still the same. This remarkable love story. I never tire of speaking and singing about the love of Abba. And people are still responding.
[ WM ] What is the name of your new album coming out?
[ Michael ] The new album is called Kingdom Come.
[ WM ] I was able to connect you with your first keyboard endorsement with Korg before your long-lasting relationship with Yamaha came along. What is your main keyboard?
[ Michael ] First of all, thank you for the connect with Korg back in the day. I am currently using the Yamaha CK88 as a controller.
[ WM ] I remember the day you called me and told me you were going to start leading some on guitar … If you are still doing that, what guitar are you using? Your old Yamaha semi-hollow electric?
[ Michael ] I have several guitars that I love, but my go-to ones are my two McPherson’ s( acoustics). And in the studio, I love writing on my Duesenberg electric.
[ WM ] What are you using for In-Ears?
