FINDING HEALING IN HIS PRESENCE W / MIKE WEAVER OF BIG DADDY WEAVE | Matt McCoy
Mike Weaver of Big Daddy Weave joined Loop Community Founder Matt McCoy to talk about their latest album, how to show up for Jesus even when it’ s hard, and forgetting about what isn’ t important.
SHOWING UP WHEN IT’ S HARD
[ Matt ] For a lot of worship leaders, they’ re tied to the paycheck. They have to be, it’ s their livelihood. They may even be in a season where they don’ t want to lead worship every week, it’ s the last thing they want to do. Have you had seasons like this?
[ Mike ] Yes, on a daily basis! Sometimes, all we can do is show up. What Jesus is calling us to do is to show up and get out of the way anyways. So, we would show up and tell people where we’ re at. There’ s a religious thing you try to uphold and do your best, but that isn’ t what Jesus is looking for from us. He’ s looking for us to bring who we are. The offering the little kid brought. It’ s definitely not enough, but he gave it to Jesus. There’ s a lot of days all we had was pain, so we gave Jesus our pain and showed up. And the beauty is, when we did that, Jesus still showed up.
LET IT BEGIN
[ Matt ] Tell me about the new album title, Let It Begin. First of all, I’ m sure this was really hard to do without your brother, since you’ ve done so many with him. But you’ re also in this season of grief. So why Let It Begin?
[ Mike ] After my brother went to Heaven, every night I would have a place I would plan to go run off and take an emotional break and stop and cry. One night it dawned on me when I got to that park, I realized I was okay. It still hurts a lot, but something had changed. We were further in the process. It was a beginning. Then I get a text from Matt Maher, who I think is incredible, and he said he had a song and thought of me,“ Let It Begin”. It was exactly our heart. It became the banner over the record. I’ ve seen it work for those grieving over losing people and for towns hit by a hurricane. We’ re super grateful for that song.
ADVICE FOR WORSHIP LEADERS
[ Matt ] What advice would you tell a younger version of yourself, when you first started playing worship music?
[ Mike ] I would say that there are these things that have nothing to do with what our purpose really is. Everything must flow out of knowing Jesus. That does not mean that I need to present myself in a way where I look like I’ m a highly religious dude. That’ s not what I mean. But to literally keep Him in the center of our sights. Even when that’ s telling Him, I’ ve got nothing. I’ ve felt him nearer to Him when I was that honest, than a billion false hallelujahs.
