I have reviewed at least eight different in-ear monitors over the years. I’ ll never pit one against the other, that’ s not my style. I will always give you my impression and perspective. This past January, I was on my way out of the NAMM show when I walked through the beyerdynamic booth and noticed these tiny IEMs on display. I got ahold of Brad, who is over their Instagram account( check that out!), and he helped me get this review underway.
Though I do not talk about competing brands in a review, I’ ll mention one that no longer exists … when I first put these DT 72’ s in my ears, they reminded me of my very first pair of molds from a company called Microsonic Music. They were single drivers and so small and tight fitting in my ears … I loved how they felt and sounded, and these remind me of those little IEMs. The beyerdynamic spec sheet explains that they use a“ Tesla. 11” driver that has a very compact, space-saving design which allows for the housing to be so small.
The Tesla. 11 driver can handle sound pressure levels up to 137dB with low levels of distortion. There are four tailored beyerdynamic IEM models. The 72s are voiced for guitar and vocal, the 70s are for mixing and critical listening, the 71s are for bass and drums, and the 73s are for keys and classic instruments.
The cable is removable, and it has a nice rubber covering and tether. It’ s got a good weight … not too heavy, but enough weight to easily fish through a jacket or a shirt. That reminds me …( PSA time) I have been in production for a few years, and I see far too many people on platforms who are not concealing their IEM cables. With so many churches streaming
