SEU Worship is a collective derived from |
the student body, faculty and alumni of |
Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fl. Their |
latest release, A Forgiving God is a nine-song |
collection of songs focusing on the grace and |
mercy of the forgiving father who is always |
welcoming, |
always |
forgiving |
and |
always |
yearning to show love to His creation, no matter |
what they have done. |
There are a few really imaginative and interesting |
musical moments on the album, one of which |
is the opener,“ Psalm 42” which is basically |
an instrumental intro with an almost hidden |
narration in the background. Along the same |
vein,“ No One” proclaims the uniqueness of |
Lord by using Psalm 24 as the scriptural basis |
sung over and over by a female vocal quartet |
surrounded by tremolo heavy keyboards, |
electronic drums and pads. I would not call |
these songs congregationally friendly as far |
“ I Want You” is more of a mainstream worship song beginning with a rhythmic single acoustic guitar as Caylie Bryant’ s wispy alto cries out all the ways she wants to experience the fullness of Christ. The simple melody mixed with strings and ethereal keyboards makes this song authentic and easy to get lost in.
“ Fruit Takes Time” is a happy yet poignant pop anthem about how God’ s timing is always perfect even though it often differs from our human experience. Chelsea Plank’ s youthful soprano soars with the violins, electronic keyboard loops and house beats as she wisely reminds the worshiper to find growth and deeper meaning in the journey as we wait on the Lord.
The title track is inspired by the parable of the prodigal son from Luke 15 as Chelsea Plank and Ashton Hage cast themselves as the prodigal and confidently sing of all the ways that the forgiving God keeps running to welcome them home while pointing us all to the fact that He longs to do that with every one of His creation.
This album is an invitation to listeners everywhere to slow down and lean into the loving arms of the Savior. There are no big hand-clapping, high-energy worship anthems among the 9 tracks included here, instead A Forgiving God is a creatively crafted story telling worship journey with indie textures and quieter moments that reflect the current worship atmosphere on the SEU campus.
