OK , full disclosure , I am a big fan of Koa wood . It is grown in Hawaii and has a nicely figured grain . It is by far more interesting to look at than mahogany , and in this GN77KCE model , you get loads of it … the top , back and side tonewoods are all Koa .
Add to that the comfort of a mini-jumbo body shape ( yes , smaller than a full-size dreadnought ) that includes a rounded cutaway allowing easy access up to the higher register . Those chime-y hi-end open chords are easy to reach and when to comes to some acoustic guitar soloing – well , you can riff around uninhibited .
Takamine has made a name for themselves since the 1980 ’ s for having good on-board electronics , and this GN77KCE sports their own TP-4TD pick-up system , complete with an equalizer and chromatic tuner built-in . In addition , you are given better intonation provided by Takamine ’ s split saddle . The quality gold tuners feel accurate , and this guitar even comes with the strap holder in the right spot on the heel of the neck .
The rounded mahogany neck shape feels stable all up and down the length of it . The wood fingerboard is Laurel and the fretwork is spot on .
The sound while playing chords was resonant and full . A good range from lows , mids to highs . To tell you the truth , I couldn ’ t decide which I liked playing more … with a pick or fingerstyle with just my fingers . Either way – I enjoyed playing this GN77KCE acoustic-electric guitar .
