IMMERSIVE AUDIO FOR WORSHIP | David Reyes
THE “ AHA ” MOMENT
Seated in a leather theater chair in the studio at DTS headquarters , I watched intently as the technicians calibrated the speakers for a demo of Headphone : X , their Immersive Audio solution . They looked up and nodded at each other and the playback started . Immediately , I sensed something was very different about the sound in the room . It was bigger and fuller than any surround sound demo I had experienced . Also , I could feel the sound above , behind and around me in a more visceral way . The photo above is of the studio where the listening test occurred . that the sound from the earbuds and the speakers were identical .
During this “ aha ” moment , I realized that was an audio experience at an entirely new level . Immersive Audio was a game changer , with huge implications for how consumers will experience audio now and in the future . In addition , it will have a big impact on how audio will be produced for film , video games and streaming .

Fast forward to 2024 , there are now more ways than ever to experience Immersive Audio on the go , on your desktop and at live venues . Figure 2 provides a roundup of devices and services that offer Immersive Audio . For songwriters and producers there are 35 commercially available solutions for creating and distributing Immersive Audio to your audience . Figure 3 provides a summary of some of the most popular Immersive Audio solutions .
The second half of the demo was even more intriguing – an A / B test of the playback in the room compared to playback over headphones ( i . e . Binaural listening ). The technicians stopped the playback in the room , handed me a pair of earbuds and instructed me to place them in my ears . They further instructed me to periodically switch between earbuds and speakers . They restarted the playback in both the earbuds and the room and I repeated the A / B test several times .
