CAPO GUITAR
ELEVATION WORSHIP “ I TRUST IN GOD ” | Mitch Bohannon
The day the new Elevation record dropped , I called it up on Spotify and that became my soundtrack to and from work . My Jeep was blaring “ Jehovah ” on repeat that first day . I just knew this article would be about that song . Then as I listened through the record , “ I Trust in God ” is the song that I kept singing over my workday .
I ’ ve said it many times , but that ’ s what we want the church attenders to do … keep singing songs through the week . If our songs are grounded in Biblical truth , this is a great thing ! The Lord speaks through music and in a day and age when Biblical values are being turned on their head in our society , a song that reminds us of our trust is in a risen Savior is very strengthening .
This song is so simple to play with the cut capo ! It ’ s only five different chord shapes . Beside the cut capo shapes being very simple , it ’ s so easy to change keys without having to think . For instance , this song in the key of “ C ” ( full capo on fret 3 / cut capo on fret 5 ) is much too high for me to sing , so I actually play it in the key of “ A ” ( cut capo on fret 2 ) and I can read the same chart .
I encourage you , no matter what song you ’ re singing , to move the capo up and down the neck and find what suits your voice best . Playing in a recorded key is not near as important as singing in a key that fits your range ... the audience will follow .
I really love the nod to “ Blessed Assurance ” in “ Trust in God .” This is not a re-written hymn , but borrowing a couple of lines from it brings familiarity . The song is in 6 / 8 time , so it has that “ hymn feel .” You can play it with a straight rhythm accenting the 1 and 4 to create the swing of 6 / 8 , or you could start out more legato by basically playing the chord changes . When I do this , I ’ ll usually down-strum and then pick back up the strings ( 1-2-3-4-5 ) just to fill space and keep things in time . You don ’ t have to be committed to only those strings but that ’ s an easy way to do it .
Create dynamics in the song by building in the choruses and the bridge . I really love the bridge ! That could be easily brought back into your worship set as a reprise no matter what key you ’ re playing in .
So , grab your cut capo and give it a strum . Find
