If you have been listening to modern worship music anytime in the last decade or so you have heard Jeffrey ’ s iconic worship guitars parts , as well as some great guitar tones as he serves worship leaders / teams both professionally and in his local church . He also mentors other worship guitar players in digital formats and with published materials . [ WM ] sat down with Jeffrey so you can get to know him better …
[ Bruce Adolph ] Jeffrey , let ’ s have our readers get to know you a little bit here . Where did you grow up and when did you start playing guitar ?
[ Jeffrey Kunde ] I grew up in a small town called Yuba City ( located in Northern California ). I was homeschooled until I left for college , and music was always a big part of my education . I started taking private lessons on various ‘ classical ’ instruments since age 6 ( piano and woodwind instruments ). Guitar was something I picked up ‘ on the side ’ in my free time at age 12 . It became my passion right away , and having a solid foundation in music theory , ear training , and how to effectively practice , I was able to get better fairly quickly as a young selftaught player .
[ WM ] You obviously didn ’ t just wake up one day and be the guitarist for Jesus Culture . What was the path that led you there ?
[ Jeffrey ] ( laughing ) Well it sort of felt like that … the short answer is that I was in the right place at the right time , before Jesus Culture was even a worldwide worship movement . At the time I was about 19 years old , attending community college and living in Redding CA . I played regularly on Sunday mornings at Bethel Church and at the time was sleeping most nights on my best friend ’ s bedroom floor ( Chris Quilala , who was renting a room from Brian and Jenn Johnson at the time ). This was before ‘ Jesus Culture ’ was more than a youth conference in Redding . One summer Kim Walker and Chris Quilala asked me to play guitar at the local Jesus Culture conference in Redding . It was around that time that this local youth conference called “ Jesus Culture ” began to travel , putting on summer and spring conferences in Atlanta , Texas and eventually even the U . K . and Australia . I ended up being one of the 4 core musicians of Jesus Culture who became the traveling , touring and recording band as Jesus Culture evolved from being just a youth conference into a band / worship movement that toured the world and recorded albums .
