The new BOSS RE-202 and RE-2 are the latest exciting , and incredibly accurate recreations of the legendary RE-201 Space Echo . The BOSS pedal versions have added Stereo Ins and Outs , along with several cool modern features like MIDI and Expression pedal capabilities and a fourth playback head .
Here ’ s a little history of the original RE-201Space Echo . Roland introduced the RE-201 Space Echo in 1974 . It was a professional tabletop tape delay unit that incorporated a single piece of tape spooled freely with one record head and three separate playback heads evenly spaced apart . They added a spring reverb that you could combine with the tape delay .
Having the three separate playback heads allowed for interesting rhythmic combinations of cascading delays . Mixing in the spring reverb was like icing on the cake . This separated the Space Echo from the other products on the market . It became a must-have item in the recording studio .
OUT OF THE BOX : The RE-202 looks amazing . It ’ s slightly bigger than a Klon pedal and has all the jacks etc . on the back to save space . It comes boxed with a high-quality pre-labeled external power supply . There ’ s a quick start guide , a card with a QR code , and attachable feet on the 202 . I loved the fact that I didn ’ t have to rip off the bottom
