he is like , “ Man , I just had this moment last night . And this feels a little wild . It was kind of a little left field from anything that we ’ d done before ”, but he just began to sing me this hook . And I was like , “ We got to do this . We got to go there .”
That moment was just a moment that happened at conference . It feels almost like a spontaneous song , even though there is structure to it . It ’ s like this is the declaration of what happens when we declare the name Jesus , if you ’ ve walked in down , he ’ s going to pick you up . You walked in sick , you ’ re going to walk out healed . All these things , this exchange of what we have when we bring our brokenness to Jesus , he ’ s going to exchange it for his goodness . And that ’ s the beauty of it .
[ WM ] I agree . I want to talk to you about your own life as a musician and producer , because you were a Christian artist long before you were called to be a pastor . I found your song “ Go ”, which I really liked ( it actually reminded me of Delirious in some ways ). So what ’ s going on with you now ? I know you ’ re walking in the role of worship leader , songwriter , and pastor . What ’ s going on ? How you ’ re balancing all that out yourself ?
[ Henry ] Yeah . I mean , I started in worship , I grew up in church . It wasn ’ t really following the Lord , but got involved in our youth worship team when I was about 16 . And then when I was 19 , just before I turned 19 , I had a really pivotal encounter with Jesus . And that was a moment where I just surrendered my life to him and started leading worship not long after that . I have been part of worship movements and bands , written songs , produced music since I was 19 years of age . When God spoke to us to move to Nashville 10 years ago , in some ways I thought a lot of that was over . I thought that was a past season . At that point I was pretty much mixing records , full time and producing for other people , that project that you ’ re talking about with the song “ Go ”, I had been invited to open for Chris Tomlin in Australia in a small run that we did .
I had these songs , I was like , “ You know what , I ’ m just going to put them out there .” I did that little project , but I ’ ve been writing and producing music for many years . When we started this church , I actually led worship almost every week for about the first two years of church because we didn ’ t have a staff , we didn ’ t have a team . I was leading worship . My wife was preaching a lot . Sometimes I would preach as well , but really through that , we got to establish our worship team and help set the platform for them . As our team ’ s grown , I ’ ve led less and less . I still am involved in our worship team , but for me I ’ m just happy to be the guy in the room , whatever needs to be done .
I ’ ve been this way , my whole life , even in church life . So you need me to set up chairs ? Done . You need me to clean the toilets ? Done . You need me to mix ? I ’ ll figure it out . And that ’ s really how I got involved in mixing and producing records . I love it . I ’ m sitting in my studio right now and I love to still make music . It is a balance for me , pastoring a church with a staff ( a decent size church ). So overseeing that , but also realizing that actually part of my calling is to create and help facilitate worship in church services and also through the producing of music . That for me , I know that ’ s part of what God ’ s called me to and gifted me to do .
It ’ s been a new season of learning how to balance both of those things so that they can be healthy and fruitful in my life and not be overwhelming , but they do balance each other out in a beautiful way . Because when I feel like
