that were on stage when he was doing his shows . I popped a Vintage 30 in this little 60 Tweed deluxe , and it was like , “ Oh my gosh ." It changed the personality of the amp so much . It was like a baby Marshall . I left that speaker in there for years . Frampton plays through it on “ Float ”, a song from Fingerprints . He loved the sound so much that he went out and started buying Tweed Fender amps from the ‘ 50s and putting vintage 30s in them .
Anyway , back to this ‘ 62 Bassman , I emailed John Paice and said , " What do you recommend ?" He goes , “ Have you heard of the red Ruby speakers that we ' re doing ?" He said , they ' re 35-watt Alnico speakers . I ended up getting a pair of those and it was an immediate love affair . It was love at first sound , because I threw a mic on it and did a demo in my studio . I had an old Tele plugged into the amp , no pedals or anything , and this is telling the truth . That ' s what you want when you ' ve got Fender on Fender violence . I say violence , it was lovely . Actually , the sound was just beautiful . I fell in love with the Ruby speakers for that Bassman , and I ' m leaving those in there .
Those are two amps where I sought out a replacement speaker , and wound up going with Celestion , but I have used Celestion speakers in the past without picking them . That ' s what my 1992 Matchless amp came with . I have a head and a 2X12 speaker cabinet from 1992 called an HC-30 . They do a thing where they put in two different treated Celestion speakers . There ' s a 30 watt and a 25 watt . It ’ s been that way since they were making the 2X12 cabinets from back in the day . If you want earlier breakup , mic the 25-watt speaker , and if you want it a little cleaner , mic the other . Also , you can hear an old basket weave Marshall 4X12 from 1968 containing 20 Watt Celestions on the Dogs of Peace “ Heel ” project . I ' ve had amps where Celestions were a part of the recipe from the factory . Without my picking those out , that ' s just the way it was .
