Lynn Anderson and was one of the last great characters of Nashville , Tennessee , “ Hey Glenn . Would you come introduce us at the Bluebird ?" He said , " Boys , I ' d be honored ." We told him it was a 10:00pm show Friday night . It ' s two minutes until 10:00pm … we ' re set up , plugging in , and turning the amps on , and no Sutton . He ' s not at the club . We ' re like , " Dang , he ' s not going to be here ." We ' re plugging in and starting to tune up and everything , and 10 o ' clock on the nose , from the back door , in walks Glenn Sutton to the stage to introduce us , wearing just his bathrobe . He introduces us , and then goes straight to his car and drives back home . The fact of the matter about the Bluebird Café is it ' s just the best place to play if you ' re a songwriter .
[ WM ] At WM , we ’ re fans of your Christian band “ Dogs of Peace ,” can you tell us about the new single , and will it lead to a possible entire album this year ?
[ Gordon ] Jeff Balding who engineered the other two albums , and then the other guys that play in the band , John Hammond , Blair Masters , Jimmy Lee Sloas and myself … that ' s really the “ Dogs of Peace .” It was Jeff ’ s idea in the last couple of months , “ Hey , why don ' t we just do a single song every three , four or five months ?" Everybody ' s got a place they can work . Blair ' s got his studio at his house where he goes and does overdubs and has his keyboards set up , John the same with the drums at his house , and then Sloas … we have to pry him out of the studios in Nashville because he ' s the hardest working bass player in Nashville .
In fact , when he walks in my studio to put the bass part on , I always jump up and fret saying , " What ' s happening to the bottom end down in Nashville while you ’ re here , it ' s dropped out !" ( laughing ) But there ' s no talk of doing an EP or another album . The only reason I think it won ' t happen is because there ' s a cohesiveness to the first album , because we did it all at once . The same for the second album . If we did a song every six months , it would take us five years to do an album . We will probably just do
Gordon with Garth Brooks
one song at a time , over time and see how far we go .
[ WM ] We ’ ve heard there ' s some activity around the Chris Gaines project and Garth Brooks alter ego . You wrote 10 of the songs on that first record . Any truth to it ?
[ Gordon ] When he ( Garth Brooks ) asked me to come do the stadium tour , and then the other times he cherry picked a day or two , “ Would you come and do the firefighters benefits show , and Susan B Komen in Kansas City in 2007 ?” There were these times where he would just do this set of nine shows there , and five shows there .
" Hey , would you come and do those ?" I stayed on his radar over the years , even though I was not there for his country thing as much as the Chris Gaines . We did a slew of TV shows and appearances with that project , and that album was a blast to do . But once he got beat up so bad over it , it became taboo to even speak about it from him . He wouldn ' t bring it up .
[ WM ] How interesting .
[ Gordon ] At some point , when he ( Garth ) asked me to do the stadium tour , he said , “ Hey , I ' ve got a 62 ’ Stratocaster that Chris Leuzinger
