ZIGGING AND ZAGGING : A MESSAGE FOR WORSHIP LEADERS AND MUSICIANS

2021 marks my 50 th year in Christian Music . Yes , 50 years !
1971 was my entry point . I was in a very talented Southern California band called “ Rebirth ”. David Diggs , Bill Batstone , Paul Johnston , my brother Beau and I , all traveled the coffee house and church venues available to this new form of music . This was long before organized Christian radio , marketing plans drafted in Nashville , large publishing revenues from songs being sung in churches , and wellcrafted tours . I have much to say on “ career and calling ”, having the perspective of many years and many roles .
I ’ ve seen a lot , done a lot , and had a lot done
to me . That ’ s where spiritual armor comes in , and Isaiah 59 lists an additional part of that raiment not mentioned in Ephesians 6 . The “ cloak of zeal ” is what I ’ m talking about . Your zeal for Christ will get you through the times when you will be done wrong . And you will be done wrong , whether you work in the secular / mainstream world , or within the church or parachurch ministry . It ’ s part of life .
It ’ s important to prepare for these times . When others “ zig ”, you need to be ready to “ zag ”. Technological advances and consumer behavior changes bear this out , as do pending changes to the church services brought on by Covid19 . Training and ongoing education is part of this preparation . I ’ ve been fortunate to serve as an Adjunct Professor now for the past 10 years , teaching in Music Business and Worship Leadership at both Dallas Baptist University and Trevecca Nazarene University .
You ’ ve seen these great institutions advertise in this publication in the past , along with Lee University , the Robert E . Webber Institute of Worship Studies , California Baptist University , Southwestern Assemblies of God University , Biola University , Western Seminary , and others .
This month , we are joined by both Cedarville University and The Calvin Institute of Christian Worship . These two very fine institutions have wonderful programs to equip you for the future . Please take notice of their advertisements and follow the links that they have provided .
So , prepare and develop yourselves for whatever is next . You will be glad that you did .
