CAPO GUITAR
EBENEZER FROM NEW CITY COLLECTIVE | Mitch Bohannon
Ebenezer. A stone of remembrance. Joshua took stones from the River Jordan and created an alter to remember God’ s help and blessing.
We had a basket of stones on which my wife wrote down blessings from the Lord. Many churches will teach this and folks will practice it largely because of Verse 2 from this amazing song …“ But O how quickly I forget the ways I’ ve seen Your faithfulness, how over and over You’ ve made a way for me.”
This is a song from New City Collective. They are not specific-church based, NCC is a group of pastors, worship leaders, and artists from across the United States with a goal to equip the church with theologically rich music. Well, this song spun up on my Spotify playlist and took me by surprise. This is one of those that I hit repeat over and over. As I listened, I could envision my church worshiping and expressing gratitude to the Lord for His goodness, His blessings, His favor.
If you look at the chart, there’ s really not much to the chord progression. I love songs like this. The chord changes really don’ t interfere with the lyric or busy-up the platform, freeing the musicians to be more engaged in worship with the whole room.
My articles are always focused on the“ how to play” side of the song. But this song is so easy to play, I thought I’ d toss out an idea on how to present it. I could see this song being sung over a slide-show of a church mission trip or possibly over one that recognizes God’ s blessings to the church over the past year( 2025).

A D F # m E Bm7 Bm E / G # Style-wise in playing the song, I would fingerpick Verse 1 and Verse 2 and then possibly strum diamonds( whole notes) through the first chorus. Going into Verses 3 and 4, I’ d lean more to playing a straight rhythm. Don’ t play busy, just focus on the chord changes and then build up into the second chorus. The Bridge section can build and / or use a cappella phrases for dynamic emphasis.
