SOUND CHECK
WHAT IS NAMM AND WHY SHOULD I CARE?
Every time you step onto the platform at your church to sing into a mic to lead worship, play an instrument as a band member or adjust an E. Q. knob at the sound board … you are benefiting from the fruit of a former NAMM Show.
Since 1901, manufacturers of musical instruments( and then later sound systems) have met with musical instrument retailers to sell their goods that will ended up in the public’ s hands. This gathering has grown into one of the largest conventions in the country. This year NAMM will attract 75,000 registrants for this five-day event at the Anaheim Convention Center in California. Three of those days will be exhibit booths of 3,500 different brands of guitars, amps, basses, keyboards, drums, pro audio, recording, lighting and yes even those band instruments like horns and tubas that we so easily overlook.
To be interested in new gear seems to be an integral part of what being a musician / tech team member is all about and our worship music genre actually has more clout than you think.
30 % of all new acoustic and electric guitars, amps and effect pedals are bought by musicians just like you – those playing worship music at their local church. Yes, that is true. As well as 30 % of all new keyboards and acoustic drums. Really? How about 50 % of all electric drum kits? Yes, and did you know that according to NAMM 60 % of all pro audio goes to houses of worship? That is a lot!
If you want to be good stewards of church budgets, when you make your next purchase to fill a need, keeping abreast of what happens at NAMM is important.
This is a mainstream event, but [ WM ] Worship Musician will be there in a big way again and NAMM has partnered with us to present some special events there. We will produce our 5 th Annual Pre-NAMM HANG on Wednesday
January 21. That same day we are adding the“ 10 Cool Things at NAMM” Live Stream where we offer you the first look at new products from the NAMM Show convention floor. How cool is that? Then on Saturday morning we have the Worship Musician Chapel service at the adjacent Hilton Hotel. All that day we host the Worship Musician Summit TEC Tracks with seven workshops( thanks to our Gear Editor Doug Doppler’ s efforts) aimed at training worship leaders, worship musician bandmates and tech teams.
Why do we do this? Well for one – it is fun. But we also believe in bringing you, our worship team friends, practical training to help you be # BetterBySunday!
