CAPO GUITAR
“ TRUSTWORTHY ” BY SETH CONDREY | Mitch Bohannon
Here we are at the starting blocks again to another year . It was five years ago that we were opening a new decade and being the year 2020 , it almost felt like a new century with all the “ 20 / 20 vision ” sermons going around , but we sure could not see what these last five years would bring ! When I heard this new song from Seth Condrey on the radio , it really stuck me , and it stuck with me . I felt like I needed the reminder that the Lord God Almighty , the Maker of Heaven and Earth is totally and completely trustworthy . Maybe the people you lead need the reminder as well . I know I ’ ll be leading this soon for our Celebrate Recovery group .
With a total of four chord shapes and simple chord progressions for verse , chorus , and bridge , this song can be adapted to any size group that you lead . Dynamics can be simple or complex … that reminds me , I ’ ve seen several posts or reels lately from people complaining and insulting modern worship music for being overly simple . Personally , I view those complainers as being possibly jealous that their song is not on the radio . Remember , we play so that people can sing and engage the Lord in worship , not so that we can be congratulated for complex chord progressions , fingerings , or strumming techniques . It ’ s not for our glory but for His . Don ’ t be a glory-thief ! Enough of my soapbox , let ’ s worship .
Do you struggle playing dynamically ? A good way to think about the dynamics is to match your guitar playing to how you sing the song . Typically , the verse is quieter than the chorus and the bridge is often either reflective or celebratory , so usually it builds back into “ chorus volume .” As recorded , “ Trustworthy ” has a steady groove , but vocally starts out pretty airy . I don ’ t want to stum full chords ( all six strings ) on the verses , but I don ’ t really want to fully palmmute until I get to the bridge , so I ’ ll strike the low end ( 5 th and 6 th strings ) on a down-strum and then on the way back up I ’ ll grab one or two of the higher strings . I will use my palm to stop the strings ( technically , that is a palm-mute ) so that the notes pop rather than ring out .
The chorus comes in strong with one of my favorite lyric lines to sing , “ so with my hands lifted high .” A lyric like that visually conveys the act of surrender and can be very powerful in worship . The first time through , I ’ ll likely be playing diamonds ( strumming only the chord changes and letting the chords ring out ). This creates a big dynamic difference to how I play the verses . Then , on the bridge , I ’ ll really palm-mute and “ chunk ” strum … play straight eighth notes muted and then build on my way out of the bridge and back to the chorus . Check out the video to see and hear what I ’ m describing .
