SING TO THE LORD | Grant Norsworthy

What a joy it is to sing worshipfully to The Lord ! It ’ s truly a wonderful thing when The Church sings of God ’ s immeasurable worth . Declaring His glory through songs brings delight to the singers and , I believe , to Almighty God too .
If you ’ re reading this , I think it ’ d be safe to assume that you agree with me . I hope you do .
When the Church gathers , it ’ s good , right and important to have other elements like Bible reading , a sermon , and more , included . But it ’ s probably fair to say that , in most situations , the people in your congregation might have forgotten the scripture reading and the sermon by lunch time . But the songs we led them to sing that morning may well stay with them for much longer .
When life gets really tough for Joe Congregant on a Thursday afternoon , clear memories of the sermon or the Bible passages from the previous Sunday are probably long gone . But he might still have the chorus of the song we invited him to sing bouncing between his head and his heart . In that moment , that powerful combination of holy poetry and melody might just help Joe in his moment of greatest need .
I listen to sermons . I read theology . I try to study The Bible . But often it ’ s song lyrics and melodies that affect me most deeply - drawing my heart more closely to God ’ s heart . Songs stay with me too . Some for years or even decades . I don ’ t think I ’ m alone in this .
There ’ s something especially potent - Godbreathed - about the combination of words and melody . Yes , I am biased , I am sure . Not everyone is wired like you and I with a particular passion for music . But I do believe that placing a high value on the human activity of singing worshipfully is not just my idea - not just a “ worship musician ’ s ” idea - it ’ s God ’ s design .
