[ Jenn ] I love that . That ’ s amazing . Got their moment really , truly some more intense than others for sure . But it just really rings true when you hear something prophesied and declared by the power of someone singing it , that really , like you , has experienced the power of that verse .
[ WM ] And you can ’ t even explain it . It ’ s so otherworldly .
[ Jenn ] Absolutely .
[ WM ] Anyway , so often the church today is divided by doctrine , social media cultures and political persuasions , and it ’ s tragic . Your song , “ The Church ” is a wonderful remembrance of who we are as believers , who we as believers are called to be , and a sobering cry for unity . What can you tell us about this song ?
[ Jenn ] This song , “ The Church ” is really special to me . And I think even from the inception of this song , how the story was written was pretty profound . I love the church . I love the global church . I love the denominations that are vastly different that all celebrate a different side of who God is , I think in a big way . And I love the aspect of the body of Christ with Jesus being the head and all of us being different parts of it . Our joke is that Bethel ’ s probably the armpit in the body of Christ , but hopefully just Jesus is the head . That ’ s all that matters . But I really do have such a deep love of not just even the different church denominations , but also the different worship movements that have come . Most of my favorites are birthed from churches , The Vineyard and Hillsong Movements and Elevation .
I think God smiles and winks , especially at worship movements that are planted in local churches . But I just think that it ’ s just beautiful to see who God is and how He ’ s represented in all these different denominations . And I ’ ve been a melting pot my whole life of Christian music and of what God ’ s doing around the world , and it ’ s just different diverse sounds and ways and communications .
And so that ’ s always been inside me since I ’ ve been little and just getting the honor and privilege of getting to travel for 25 years and experience so many different incredible places . Obviously , no one ’ s perfect and there are highs and lows everywhere , but just to see Jesus ’ s beautiful expression all over the world has just been one of my greatest honors of my life . And so , to write this song , we were actually in a little writing camp with a few different churches .
One was Passion City Church , the Giglio ’ s , a few of their worship leaders and then Upper Room Church out of Dallas , and then a few of our Bethel writers . And so , we were in a room together , we had written a few songs , and we only had two hours left of this little three- day writing camp . I said , “ Hey , what if we all just got in a room together and just wrote a song together ”? And everyone was like , “ Yeah , let ’ s do it ”. And so , we sat down and instantly , I don ’ t even remember how it started , I think it was with a melody on the piano that a guy called Oscar Gamboa was playing . And we just started writing about the beauty of the church , the global church , and it was ‘ birthed ’ is all I can say . It was almost like being in labor in a wild sense .
