to help us . To dive into this online resource , where we do that on a bigger scale ( for more than 12 students ), we had the thought of starting with the top CCLI songs — theologically sound songs . And so we did hundreds of songs where we would cover them , and we would put a video camera on every instrument . We would give you a close look , as a worship band , to show each musician ‘ here ’ s how to play this part ’ on whatever instrument you play . And it ’ s loud in the mix .
And then we would write a devotional on that song , just pushing people to the Word . I ’ ll use this song to lead you to God ’ s Word , and then we would supply it with scripture tagging , charts , and vocal tools . So every song became its own world . Then we would come around worship teams with other content too , like craft training , heart training , and songwriting . So yeah , it ’ s been great . We ’ re about 10 years in , and we ’ re still on track .
[ WM ] That ’ s an amazing resource . We just did your version of “ How Great Thou Art ” from The Worship Initiative yesterday in church . I played bass on it . I think it ’ s great what you ’ re doing . Anytime you can resource the church with a good product , it ’ s a win-win for everybody .
I started [ WM ] Worship Musician 20 years ago because so many churches needed help . Modern worship was changing things over night . The silent stage emerged . People were still looking at overhead projectors for lyrics , and everything was going in a new direction , including adding a full band to the platform . But it ’ s been neat to see what ’ s happened in the last 20 years , and good training resources help .
So how do you guys get your tight harmonies that you ’ re so well known for ?
[ Shane B ] Well , you get some freak show who can sing like a woman , and you just push the record button and let him spend about 10 minutes on it , and then it ’ s done forever . The last thing that Everett wants to do is sing or do anything musical . But he just happens to be really good at singing . So , you just put him in the studio , and he does his thing . We kind of talk through it . We ’ ve kind of learned some language over the years , but there ’ s really not a ton to it . I mean , he just gets in there and sings the harmony .
[ WM ] Amazing .
[ Shane B ] We just came out with a shirt that says , “ Sing the harmony .” That ’ s what he does — sing the harmony .
[ Shane E ] What ’ s funny about that is that Shane B just kept writing songs higher and higher . I don ’ t know if he was testing me or what . But I feel like every record ... it ’ s just getting higher . But in our older age , maybe he ’ s coming down a little bit , but I don ’ t know . ( laughing )
[ Shane B ] But we just kind of fell into this , and we didn ’ t have a lot of things that pointed
