CAPO GUITAR
THROWBACK TO 2003 : YOU ARE MY KING | Mitch Bohannon
Did your church do a “ Vision ” series or focus going into the year 2020 ? I remember seeing social media posts from many churches featuring “ 20 / 20 Vision ” as January 2020 was approaching . Then in 2021 everyone was saying , “ We didn ’ t see that coming !” Whew ! It ’ s been a whirlwind . Are you tired yet of hearing people telling stories that include the words , “ then COVID happened ?” I know I am .
Looking forward is a great practice and the Lord promises to give us a hope for the future . But as we go into 2023 , I want to look back 20 years . We just celebrated the 20-year anniversary of the Short-Cut Capo and [ WM ] Worship Musician is in its 20 th year as well .
One of the top worship songs from 2003 is one I led often , and this song also connects some dots … This was written actually in 1996 by Billy Foote and it gained a bigger audience in 2003 when the Newsboys released it . Billy taught Chris Tomlin how to use the cut capo and back then it didn ’ t have a name , so Chris was calling it the “ Foote capo ”. I met Chris at Worship Together 2000 in San Jose and soon after he explained to me how he was using the 3-string capo , which led me to begin creating the chord chart that I ’ ve given or sent to many of you . If you ’ ve not received one , email me at cutcapo @ gmail . com and I ’ ll be glad to send it to you .
As I look back at the songs I led 20 years ago , “ You Are My King ” is certainly one of my favorites . I love that the verse , the chorus , and the bridge can be rearranged in any order . You could start or end the song with any section and the bridge can be cut in half or looped as long as the worship leader would like to loop it . I love to combine songs together , so in the video , I bounced to the Doxology during the bridge . You could blend “ You Are My King ” with many different familiar songs and give this song a second life in your worship setlist .

Dynamics can be as big or as simplistic as you like as well . For the video , I used a basic strum pattern with a pick , but I will often begin this song with fingerpicking to keep it light and allow for more of a dynamic build . You ’ ll see I use some double-stops to create a rise following

the “ B ” chord . Again , email me if you ’ d like tabs on that . It ’ s all very simple !

Many of us use hymns in our setlists . I would encourage you going into 2023 to find some of these songs that were impactful at the “ turn of the century ” twenty years ago and revive them , rearrange them , reuse them , and see your congregation embrace them again .
