SOUND CHECK
SEEK YE FIRST 2023 : BACK TO BASS-ICS ?
I woke up on a recent Saturday morning and in that dreamy stage between fast-asleep and fully-awake , I got the idea that maybe I should pick up my Fender Jazz bass that has been hanging on my wall neglected . I am not a bass player , but I have it around for when I do record some things . Usually , my son Drew plays the bass parts for me , as I am doing my best just to get the guitar parts down .
The reason I was thinking about the bass was that our small church ’ s worship team configuration is normally an acoustic guitar player , a keyboard player , a drummer and two vocalists . I thought that perhaps a bass part would help round out the sound some . Also , a bonus from having a bass player on board is that it frees up the keyboard player from covering the bottom end so much . I don ’ t ’ even know if our worship team would want to add in bass at this point , but I had the thought , nonetheless .
Not that I am a bass player by any stretch of the imagination . I did first learn to play some bass parts before I picked up guitar , but that was over 50 years ago . You can get some rust in your playing after 50 years … and I wasn ’ t that accomplished back then to begin with . Ha !
Later that same Saturday I remembered my bass thoughts and sat down with the Jazz bass and started to play the old praise chorus “ Seek Ye First ” ( written by Karen Lafferty ). Then I started to practice / think through better ways to voice the bass lines for the song . After a bit of a struggle , I remembered there are so many helpful tools out there for worship musicians ( instructional videos , practice tracks , chord charts etc .) that I should go and brush up on them .
But back to the song for a minute . If I were to give you any advice for this , the first magazine issue of the new 2023 year , it would be the
words from this classic praise chorus I was studying … Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you . Allelu , Alleluia ! Ask , and it shall be given unto you , seek and ye shall find , knock and it shall be opened unto you . Allelu , Alleluia !
May the Lord bless you , as you follow that good instruction .
