THRIVE WORSHIP Song Spotlight “ Coming Back ”
Thrive Worship is the musical collective based out of Bayside Church in Sacramento , CA whose sole focus is to write songs , lead worship and craft experiences that help “ unwrap the Gospel ” for every person . They have been releasing live worship albums and EP ’ s since 2019 .
Their latest single release entitled “ Coming Back ” is an honest and personal call for all believers to return to the basics of faith and to once again be caught up in the presence and love of their creator .
Led by Mitch Wong , the song begins with a fairly typical pad and Nord piano and at first listen , I almost clicked the stop button because I thought I knew where this song was about to go , but as I listened , I was impressed by what came next . Verse one is a heartfelt cry for help to God by someone who is tired of going through the veritable “ check-the-box ” motions of the daily Christian life . Wong sings fervently about how he longs to once again feel the wonder and joy of His Savior .
The chorus gets right to point that we need to constantly be reminding ourselves to return to God ’ s word and the love of Jesus which are the basics of faith . The writing and melody of the chorus stuck in my head the first time I heard it , and the poignancy of its message is one that we all need to be singing in our churches .
After a catchy piano interlude , verse two outlines what happens within our hearts when we return to our first love ; Cause I can feel a world of difference . Suddenly the room is shifting . I ’ m finding it again , the wonder of Your presence . It ’ s a purposeful statement that points us again to the idea that when we refocus ourselves on Jesus , everything else seems secondary and we are once again where we were designed to be .
Chorus two follows with a bit of a bump in the musical energy before the bridge brings the energy back down with a declaration that ; Nothing matters more to me , You ’ re all I need , nothing matters more to me . Now normally I would call a line like this overdone and yes , we have heard countless phrases similar in the
past few years , but in the context of the song , it fits . The song ends with another chorus and outro with the quiet bridge which was a little obvious but still made sense .
As I sang along , I found myself considering my own faith journey as a child of God who works in the church . I began to realize how many times I fall into the “ check-the-box ” category when it comes to experiencing God in my everyday life . I often take His mercy and love for granted and personally have at times lost the wonder of who He is and what He has done . It is a feeling that all believers have experienced and so the theme of the song hits true to every person who calls Jesus Lord . This seemingly simple and somewhat repetitive anthem brought me back to this reality and I was glad I stuck with it . I wouldn ’ t say “ Coming Back ” is anything extraordinary when it comes to originality , arrangement , or style , but lyrically , the song speaks to the heart of every believer nudging them to fall in love once again with their Creator .
