Cosmetically , the 4055 is very sleek . Its compact design makes it super easy to place wherever you like in the drum , which can sometimes be a problem with other microphones . But don ’ t be fooled into thinking that compact means it doesn ’ t produce a “ big ” sound . We both were pleasantly surprised by how “ phat ” this mic sounded . This is a superb design for a kick mic that ’ s easy to position in a variety of ways to shape the sound you want .
The DPA site also says that this microphone picks up the “ clear / true sound of the kick drum .” During our first session with the 4055 , David and I both commented that the drum sounded “ very natural ,” so we totally agree with DPA ’ s statement . Also , the mic has relatively flat frequency response by design , which works well for shaping the sound to your liking .
To my surprise , David even said that this could be his new “ go-to ” microphone ! That ’ s a pretty major endorsement considering the other classic mics we were testing . He also mentioned that with other mics he ’ s often shaping a kick sound with EQ to get what the DPA 4055 delivered just by turning up the fader . That ’ s amazing !
I won ’ t go into the details of how we had to EQ the other microphones . They ’ re all great mics in their own way , but we both agreed the DPA 4055 could hold its own and even be a stand-out amongst the competition . The only challenge is that its $ 730 MSRP can be steep for someone on a smaller budget . But if you ’ re into investing in professional equipment , the DPA 4055 should be on your list . It is a powerful and versatile kick drum microphone for both studio and live applications .
