Editor ’ s Note : I first heard about Yancy at a large ministry conference here in the Northwest ( www . nwmincon . org ). I would go every year as an exhibitor to represent [ WM ] and the Christian Musician Summit conference we produce here .
Every year Yancy would be leading worship and teaching workshops on kids worship . I was always in the exhibit area and never had a chance to see her . I noticed her from a far as she always had cool guitars , and I notice those types of things . At that same conference I ran into a Christian music industry friend of mine who worked in the kids worship category ( Mark Campbell ). I asked him if he could recommend someone who would make a good columnist for [ WM ] in the children ’ s worship space . He immediately told me about Yancy , and boy am I grateful for that . Ever since Yancy has brought good content writing about kids worship to [ WM ].
Now Yancy has reached a milestone with a book that is overflowing with practical ministry help , written from someone who has the experience and the heart to tackle the big questions .
Let ’ s sit down together and discuss Sweet Sound / The Power of Discipling Kids in Worship with Yancy herself …
[ WM ] What led you to write this book about children , worship and discipleship ?
[ Yancy ] I ’ ve been focused on music for kids and families for the last thirteen years . The whole time I ’ ve known there was very little out there in the form of training for church leaders to get in this area . I knew the need was there , but it had not been the right time to do anything about it . During the summer of 2020 I grew more and more confident that God was telling me now was the time . Writing this book was something that He told me , and I believe equipped me to do . I ’ m excited to have something tangible available to help to help train and equip leaders how to disciple kids in worship .
[ WM ] What is your dream for kids worship ?
[ Yancy ] I want to help kids learn the rhythm of running to the Father in everything they go through . If we can begin teaching them that from the time they are young , and give them practice through repetition over the weeks and years , then we will have a generation of adults that understand the importance of their worship to God . I believe one of the ways we taste and see that He is good is by experiencing His presence . Worship is a gateway to that . I want to leave kids wanting more of who He is , and time spent with our loving , heavenly Father .
[ WM ] This book is bigger than just a how to get kids to sing , this goes into a much deeper study of David . What lessons from David did you discover writing this ?
