And so when we did it in rehearsal , it just went off , and people absolutely ... I wish we could release the version from rehearsal , because the whole choir just took it , and they even added parts to it . And I think that ' s the beauty of the song , is that might not be your specific exact story , but I think there ' s enough nostalgia in there that you can find yourself in that story . And you can almost write your own verse or take little moments throughout these different verses and find yourself there .
[ WM ] Yeah , absolutely . It ' s a tradition that ' s not practiced very much anymore , but there used to be a lot of those kind of songs , not in the worship context , but like I said , in country music and in folk music , like in the folk revival of the late 1950s and early ' 60s . And you can just sense everyone is hanging on the next word that you ' re ... they ' re right there with you . And really , isn ' t that what worship should be about , right ?
[ Brandon ] Yes , yes .
[ WM ] I ’ ve noticed some guitar tutorials on YouTube that you ’ ve taught . That is so generous of you ! James Taylor does this as well on his website , and I ’ ve always had great respect for others sharing their talents in this manner . Tell us about your decision to do this .
[ Brandon ] Well , funny fact . I ' ll say , speaking of James Taylor , he was the only artist other than Christian music I was allowed to listen to . Because my Dad loved James Taylor , so I literally grew up on WOW Worship and Christian radio , and all these different Christian artists , and James Taylor .
That ' s my childhood right there . I literally had all these worship books to learn how to play worship songs , and then I had James Taylor ' s workbooks .
Yeah . So , it ' s crazy you bring that up . I think my heart to share tutorials would be to ... honestly , I know I ' m a worship pastor and I ' ve grown up in the church , and I know what it feels like to not have much in worship resources … but still must pull Sunday off . And so , I want to eliminate every challenge for the local worship leader to be able to do these songs . I want it to be as easy as possible for them to implement these songs and give them as much resourcing as I can .
I don ' t always do the best job at that , but I do love resourcing the church . And because
I want to be responsible for raising up other Brandons in the church . And if that is putting out chord charts , or showing youngins ’ or whoever , whatever age , how to play this song so that they can more easily implement it in their church , then I think it ' s a pretty great use of my time .
