CAPO GUITAR
THROWBACK TO 2003: KATHRYN SCOTT“ AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS” | Mitch Bohannon
The new record release from House of Worship has brought many“ older” worship songs to mind lately. If you’ ve not heard it, I highly recommend! I can recall so many memories of leading services where we saw the Lord move. You know, those“ older songs” don’ t have to be just memories and so many songs shouldn’ t have to be forgotten!
Do you remember Kathryn Scott’ s“ At the Foot of the Cross”? Trade these ashes in for beauty / And wear forgiveness like a crown / Coming to kiss the feet of mercy / I lay every burden down / At the foot of the cross.
At The Foot Of The Cross( Ashes To Beauty)
Music and lyrics by Kathryn Scott INTRO E
VERSE 1 B
C # m At the foot of the cross
A
E Where grace and suffering meet B
C # m You have shown me Your love
A
B Through the judgment You received
F # m E / G # A B And You ' ve won my heart
F # m E / G # A A / B Yes, You ' ve won my heart, Now I can
What powerful lyric and music to match. This chord progression is one that is perfect for the Short-Cut Capo. In fact, back in 2003, I was selling the Short-Cut Capo on my website, and I recall Kathryn Scott ordering several of them when she was in the U. K.
Dynamics on this song are very simple. As recorded, it’ s just got a steady, straight rhythm. For my situation, I would most probably play verse 1 and even chorus 1 finger style and then build going into verse 2. I’ m leading in a place where I am the only guitar. It’ s been just my acoustic and a piano for a while and I’ ve just recently added a keyboard for pads and strings. So, I’ ve been using an A / B pedal where I’ ll run the A-channel straight to the board and the B-channel goes through my Hotone Ampero II running mostly reverb and a touch of delay. It sounds more like a shimmer. So, I’ ll run either dry or a blend of dry with the B-channel added underneath. In my case, I’ d play finger style with the shimmer added and switch to just my acoustic channel( dry) as I build into verse 2.

E B A F # m C # m E / G # I have always loved the chord progression from the“ F # m” to“ E / G #” to“ A” with the Short-Cut Capo. The bass walk just feels right as you play through. This song would be great at the ending of a worship set or as a response song.
Go back and listen to the 2003 recording, grab your Short-Cut Capo, and worship along! I just may be adding this song to my setlist this month!
