Nineties Worship Night , Karen Gentry
[ WM ] What key songs come top of mind to you from this period ?
[ Chad ] I ’ m a big fan of Top 5 lists , so I ’ ll give you a couple here . Historically and from personal experience , I would suggest that “ Shout To The Lord ,” “ Breathe ,” “ I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever ,” “ You Are My King ( Amazing Love ),” and “ Open The Eyes Of My Heart ” were the most well-known songs of that decade . My personal list would also include Andy Park ’ s “ Spirit Of The Sovereign Lord ” and Lindell Cooley ’ s “ I Need You More ” ( both popularized by the Brownsville Revival ), “ Ancient Of Days ” performed by Ron Kenoly , Scott Underwood ’ s “ Take My Life ” from Vineyard , and Danny Chambers ’ “ Let The Rain Of Your Presence .”
[ WM ] Do you feel that the British entry into what was primarily an American genre here in the states , was significant , and if so , in what ways ?
[ Chad ] Yes , absolutely ! My perspective is for two reasons . First , Delirious ? brought an electric guitar driven , U2-style focus to worship music that had previously not been there . The late 80s and early 90s had been all about keyboards and acoustic guitar leading the way and the UK brought something fresh that Passion Music would later expound upon . Second , UKstyle worship expanded the box of what was previously considered to be congregational worship . Martin Smith of Delirious ? explains in his interview that the revolutionary Cutting Edge album was the very antithesis of what a formulaic and industry-commissioned project would ’ ve looked like . “ The Happy Song ”… need I say more ? ( laughing )
[ WM ] And you ’ re partnering with Integrity Music and they in turn are partnering with other labels in bringing focus back on many of these songs . Tell us about that dynamic . I ’ m sure all labels and publishers would love to see their catalogs revisited .
[ Chad ] Yes , Integrity Music has been a wonderful partner in providing both wise counsel to our docuseries-related licensing needs and also providing digital distribution for our newly formed record label ( NWN Records )
through Integrated Music Rights . The goal of our record label is to produce well-executed studio and live covers of various worship songs from the 90s catalogue . For example , our 15- song studio compilation album Break Through The Stars ( which will be released soon after this article goes live ) is definitely worth a listen if you enjoy this type of content .
[ WM ] I notice that you co-lead in worship along with your wife . I think that ’ s extraordinary . What can you tell us about that ?
[ Chad ] Yes , we have been leading worship together as “ Chad and Karen Gentry ” for several years now at various churches across the country . It all started with us meeting each other at what was formerly Oasis Church in Nashville , TN , pastored by Danny and Jill Chambers . Danny was definitely the most influential figure to me in regards to 90s worship and it was his passing in September of 2020 that set the wheels in motion for us to create Nineties Worship Night to honor his and others ’ legacies . My wife and I now have shifted our focus to co-leading worship at the Nineties
