SOUND CHECK
WORSHIP MUSICIAN ’ S CHAPEL AT THE NAMM SHOW
It is good to celebrate milestones . This was my 41 st Winter NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Center in sunny California and it was my best one yet ! You will read more about that in our NAMM Show Report in this issue . It is amazing to think how faithful the Lord has been to me in this case .
This time though one thing was very different , and it stretched me spiritually . Several years ago , I asked NAMM if we could start a musician ’ s chapel on the Sunday morning at NAMM ( the 4 th and last day of the convention ). There used to be a prayer meeting years before that , but it had stopped . The convention itself is a mainstream event and it can have some dark elements to it . Many folks there are lost spiritually , and it manifests itself in different ways .
NAMM generously gave us a meeting room at the Hilton Hotel next door to the Convention
Center . So , each year I ask veteran musician and longtime friend Bob Bennett to play 15 minutes of music and then I ask a guest speaker to talk for about 10 minutes … to give words of encouragement to the industry folks that wanted to gather as believers . I have had several different speakers over the years , but this time I booked myself in that slot . I am not a public speaker . My role at our Christian Musician Summit conferences is to prepare the stage , greet the attendees and then get out of the way and let the worship leaders and speakers do what they are called to do .
This time I was in the speaker seat and to be honest it was a little daunting , as I wanted to serve the people well and hopefully give them something significant devotionally . I am not a pastor nor a theologian by any stretch of the imagination , but my wife Judy encouraged me and said , “ Just be yourself ”. That helped quell some of the nerves , but not all . I had her and
other ’ s prayers going for me too … so I took a deep breath and sat in the speaker ’ s chair to give my “ Bruce ’ s Tips for Spiritually Surviving NAMM ” talk to about 50 or 60 folks that morning . Then Bob Bennett placed a musical cap to the message with his voice and guitar like only he can .
