CONSOLE EFFECTS : OFF THE BEATEN PATH , PART 3 | Jeff Hawley
I ’ ve received great feedback on the first two parts of this ‘ Off the Beaten Path ’ console effects series , so I ’ m excited to present Part 3 and continue the trend . We tackled Automatic Double Tracking and Space Echo in Part 1 . Part 2 included a deep dive into Phasers and Rotating Speaker effects . This time we ’ re going to look at Transient Controllers and Gated Reverbs . Let ’ s get right into it !
SCALING THE PEAK OF DYNAMIC CONTROL AWESOMENESS :
here for a sense of what transient control devices can do .
I ’ m sure you are asking just what the difference is between a compressor and a transient controller . Great question ! Glad you asked . One way to think of the difference between a compressor and a transient controller is to think of the compressor ’ s threshold knob drawing a line in the proverbial sand between the parts of a program signal that are impacted ( above the line ) and those that aren ’ t ( below the line ). If you have the threshold set at level X , you won ’ t have compression effects until material occurs above level X .
In contrast to this ‘ only above the threshold ’ sort of application for a compressor , a transient controller looks instead at changes in amplitude as its ‘ trigger ’. Instead of all signals above the threshold being in scope , each quick change in amplitude ( a transient ) comes into play . A transient controller can even tweak low level ( quiet ) transients , not just those that rise above a general threshold that has been set . Also important to note — extremely loud transients don ’ t necessarily get over-processed as they might in the case of a standard compressor . 102 February 2023 Subscribe for Free ...
