peace.” He is our peace. This arrangement is actually one of my favorite things I’ ve ever recorded.
Songs like“ I’ ll Be Home for Christmas” and“ Winter Wonderland” carry that warm, nostalgic glow, and the lush string arrangements throughout the album make everything feel cinematic.
We recorded so much of it live in the old RCA building in Nashville— real instruments, real horns, real strings. Nothing artificial. I wanted it to sound like Christmas should.
And“ Hark the Herald” has the gospel-tinged feel I’ ve always dreamed of singing. These songs aren’ t new, but I hope listeners hear them in a fresh and beautiful way.
[ WM ] I must say the arrangements are gorgeous on this album.“ I’ ll Be Home for Christmas” just took my breath away. You’ re also introducing a couple of new Christmas songs on this project, which is not an easy thing to do. What can you tell us about this?
[ Natalie ] Thank you— that means so much. And yes, introducing new Christmas songs is definitely not easy, because people already have such a deep emotional connection to the classics. But I’ m really excited about the two originals on this project.
“ Christmas Looks Good on You” actually started with an idea our friend Sarah Reeves brought to me and Bernie. It’ s a sweet, slightly sassy love note to my husband, who is never thrilled about setting up our flocked Christmas tree every year. The whole song is basically me telling him that Christmas literally looks good on him. It’ s so hooky and fun— the kind of song you’ ll catch yourself singing under your breath … maybe to the point of being slightly annoyed.( laughing)
“ God’ s Gift to Us” was written with Mitch Wong, who brought the initial idea to church one morning when we were leading worship together. I’ ve been wanting a song that simply and powerfully tells the gospel message of Christmas. This song does that so beautifully.
