attack and is very JHS Morning Glory-ish.( one of my favorite overdrives).
The lower-gain( G1) tones are articulate and very responsive. It’ s somewhere between a boost and overdrive, and it’ s super smooth, with a more balanced midrange bump to my ears. There is a wide range of musical, clean-to-lightly clipped tones available. It’ s perfect for modern semi-clean lines that need to cut through the mix. Moving on to G2, here you have some real crunchy distortion for lead tones. There’ s plenty of gain for soloing and crunched-up chords. This is an excellent complement to the G1 setting, yielding two separate usable sounds. One semi-clean and the second nice and beefy. Beyond that, by combining both circuits with G1 and G2 engaged, you can get the crazy fuzz tones with seemingly infinite sustain. The
Cut mini switch is a helpful option, especially in higher-gain settings when using a 4x12 cabinet or emulation. It tightens up the bottom end without losing the beef.
MY TAKEAWAY: To me, the Kilt-10 is one of JHS’ s best-ever pedals. I love how it has more sparkle and headroom without losing that raw Marshall-ina-box punch. It’ s like two pedals in one small footprint when you add an external red switch or a similar one of your choice. Most switching systems can also be programmed to control G2 on or off in a saved patch change. I like that it’ s true bypass- not eating up the tone when bypassed. The G2 is pure modern dirt, sounding big and authoritative. It is well-suited for either humbuckers or single coils.
I had great tones with all three basic food groups: PRS, Gretsch, and Fender. Using the tone knob, I could get all three guitars to sing. I’ ll likely use the Fuzz on special occasions in the studio as well. Kilt 10 was also happy working alongside some of my other distortion pedals. The impedance is set right. If you are looking for a versatile, great-sounding pedal, the Kilt 10 should be on your short list.
