STAYING SPIRITUALLY GROUNDED W / TOMMEE PROFITT | Matt McCoy
Tommee Profitt sat down with Loop Community Founder Matt McCoy to talk about his Christmas album and show, and how he stays spiritually grounded while leading worship.
[ Matt ] How do you stay spiritually grounded in what you’ re doing and not let it become about the fame and spotlight?
[ Tommee ] There have been so many stories in my personal life that I’ ve seen God work in and do, that were so clearly not me, that there’ s no way I could think I did them. That was my foundation for everything. Even in my marriage. When we got married, we were dirt poor. We couldn’ t go to Taco Bell once a month. And not even just in a financial way, but the way that God showed up and did things in worship settings and every area of life, we both have given everything to Him.
I’ m very passionate about this topic. I remember when I started leading worship as a young teen, and I was blindsided by adults making comments that I was trying to show off. It was not even remotely on my mind. So, I started praying a prayer that God would reveal my intentions while I was on stage. I prayed that He would keep my intentions about serving Him and worshiping Him, and that people would see that and not be distracted. If people are distracted by thinking you’ re all about yourself, they’ re not going to be able to follow you and worship with you.
I think that’ s a powerful prayer for all worship leaders: Reveal my intentions. God help me to always make this about you, soften my heart, and if it’ s ever not in the right place, expose that.
[ Matt ] Are there any spiritual practices that have helped you stay centered? Especially for people who work at a church they experience a lot of opinions or drama on their team.
[ Tommee ] Something that has stuck with me since college, one of my professors told me that every morning he would get down on his knees and give the day to God.“ Change my desires to match your desires for me.” That was 20 years ago, and that’ s a practice I’ ve adopted so many times in my studio. Before we went on sale for our first Christmas show I got on
my knees and prayed. There’ s something about removing distraction and being in that posture. Your prayer life is the most crucial practice to stay grounded.
Our prayer life is also supposed to be constant, all day every day. I feel like that’ s the mode of my brain. Walking to your car, walking up the stairs, you can be praying. It doesn’ t always have to be a dedicated time where you lock the doors. Sometimes you don’ t have the space or time to do that. It’ s about being in constant contact with God.
