SOUND CHECK
IT’ S BEGINNING TO SOUND LIKE CHRISTMAS
When I received the list of five songs for this upcoming Sunday that I was scheduled to play bass on, I noticed it was a good mix of old and new Christmas songs. Plus, we had one special choir song thrown in to practice for the following week.
So, six songs to learn for this Saturday’ s worship band rehearsal. You know what we say here in WM magazine,“ Learn the songs at home through practice and rehearse the songs with the worship team( rehearsal is not the time to practice).” I received a list of YouTube videos that had the six songs listed to practice along with in the style that we are going to present them. Here are the selected songs …
•“ O Come, All Ye Faithful” – Alan Jackson( a bit of a Country genre style)
•“ Sing We the Song of Emmanuel” – Matt Boswell( pretty straight-ahead worship)
•“ O Come, O Come Emmanuel( Live)” – Chris Tomlin( Moody in C-minor and 12 / 8 time)
•“ A Christmas Alleluia( Live)”- Chris Tomlin featuring Lauren Daigle and Leslie Jordan( slow tempo, pad filled and contemplative worship – wonderful song)
•“ Angels We Have Heard on High” – Love to Sing( kid’ s choir like with a moving bass line)
•“ Christmas Day” – Chris Tomlin & We the Kingdom( a Christmas worship anthem with a cool repeating vocal melody line that I can hear our volunteer choir singing with energy – we are an older congregation so they will need to step it up – it’ s going to be wonderful).
Now remember, I am not a bass player( I play guitar modestly) but my little church needs a bass player. I usually practice the easier songs in the set for an hour on Thursday, then the whole set of five on Friday for an hour and then I run through them all for an hour again Saturday morning before going to our worship team rehearsal that morning. There we work out any wrinkles and then rehearse for an hour Sunday
morning before service, playing the songs just as we are going to present them.
Yes, I can use that much practice and rehearsal – Ha! We played two of the six songs last year, but it has been a whole year now, so it is like starting all over. I know if I carve out the practice time my confidence will grow and if I show up to rehearsals faithfully( with my short scale Martin acoustic bass and my Fishman Loudbox Micro amp in hand) that it will all work out – to God’ s glory!
It’ s beginning to sound like Christmas. So, to all of you – our readers, our writers, our advertisers and our small team of Matt Kees and Steve Sattler … Merry Christmas!
