Worship Pastor , speaker , song camp leader , creative thought leader and songwriter extraordinaire , Nick Herbert , sat down with us recently . His new Capitol Christian Music Group EP , The Writing Room , abundantly showcases new worship songs for your congregation to embrace . Nick tells the story of his beginnings , his songwriting journey , The Gas Street Church in Birmingham , UK , and the background of some of his new songs .
[ Alex ] Nick , how are you today ? Thank you so much for this time .
[ Nick ] Yeah , I ’ m really good . Thank you for having me .
[ WM ] Please tell us about your background and your current roles within St . Luke ’ s Gas Street Church in Birmingham ?
[ Nick ] Yeah , of course . Going back quite a way , I didn ’ t grow up in a Christian family at all , but I had quite an encounter with God when I was about 16 . And during that , I guess in a nutshell , there was the kind of a sense of , “ Wow , worship is an amazing place to really experience God ” and to have a huge passion for that . I got involved in my local church , which was I ’ d say a non-denominational , quite charismatic church , and was like the second guitarist guy in the band . I was the guy that stands at the edge of the stage behind a music stand , just hoping that no one notices that I can ’ t play a B7 chord . Give me a C and a D , but don ’ t throw B7 in there . And I guess that ’ s where it all started . And then various people , prayerfully had a sense over my life that this is going to be a thing you ’ re going to be doing as part of your calling . And so learned my trade a little bit in the local church , which was based just outside Birmingham , and then moved to London to study a fine art degree . And it was during that time I sort of encountered large church , so church that was on a slightly larger scale with sort of serious musicians .
A thousand people showing up in the UK in the church is a pretty big deal . And that ’ s when I thought , “ Wow , I really want to get involved in this ”. I ’ ve seen a sort of dedication and commitment to this that I really feel in my heart gradually got involved . And then long story short , I guess as I finished my last year of my degree and finals , I actually started working for a church part-time as a worship leader .
And the day my degree and college finished , I went full-time straight into full-time ministry as a worship leader and worship pastor . I did that for many years , and helped establish the church . We moved locations within London and I was there for many , many years doing all the things with the creative community in London . And then after a while we moved to another church . I met my wife Ali . We moved to another church in London and then eventually felt this call to come back to Birmingham as part of a church plant with Tim and Rachel Hughes .
Tim ’ s a really good mate of mine . We ’ ve known each other for a long time and we had quite an interesting moment actually . One day my wife Ali and I were at a conference . Ali sort of bravely sensed that we might end up going on
