different listener and different churches . And I think that ’ s the first time I realized , “ Wow ! If we hadn ’ t had that moment of courage and sort of failure and freedom to go … Okay , play another idea . Okay , here we go , play another one .” And on the fifth idea , it was worth digging . We landed some gold . And I think that ’ s one of the kind of idiosyncrasies of songwriting in the nature of it . What can feel like trash one day can feel like treasure the next . So I was definitely intimidated , but I ’ m glad we stuck with it and we ’ ve developed a writing relationship since then and we write regularly now .
[ WM ] Well , you definitely have to check your ego at the door , don ’ t you ?
[ Nick ] Yeah , absolutely .
[ WM ] Well , I ’ m intrigued by one of the distinctives of your church . The website says that rewilding is one of your objectives . Tell us about that ?
[ Nick ] Well , basically where that idea originated begins with a substantial country estate that a family owns in the south of England . It is an estate that was perfectly laid out with a beautiful house and acres and acres of neatly manicured lawns . But what they realized over time is that it was a place where nothing really was living or growing and that things were dying . So they made a radical decision to let the borders , the hedges , everything just run wild and see what happened .
And what was beautiful about that is what they realized after a while that through letting this estate and all this land that they ’ d so beautifully manicured letting it run wild , they realized wildlife started to return .
And what people say is that essentially , one of the first things visitors now hear is a kind of low-level hum of the noise of the wildlife and a sense in which this place is living is real . And I think where we ’ ve translated that as a church , is that sometimes you ’ ve got to create a place where things are allowed to run
