How many of you are still including hymns in your setlists ? I see that hand … and that one . Maybe you ’ re leading “ updated ” hymns with new choruses or bridges added . There are truly some great ones out there and they can be so impactful in worship .
I was having this conversation with my son , Sam a while back . I ’ ve mentioned many times that he leads worship at First Baptist Church Westlake , LA . I used to be the worship pastor there and Sam played guitar for me back in the day . Oh , we still laugh about some of those old stories !
Sam is still pulling out some of those songs we led eight to ten years ago … and some of those songs were eight to ten years old at the time , so some are 16-20 years old . Are you using songs from that era ? I would venture to guess that most reading this article are using songs from the last four or five years along with some hymns that are multiple decades old .
At the start of a new year , a new season … I would encourage you to look back at songs that were impactful during the years that many churches were making the jump from traditional to contemporary worship . One of the worship leaders and writers that really influenced me back then was Carl Cartee . Carl is still leading worship and writing from his church , Fellowship Bible Church in Brentwood , TN .
In the early 2000 ’ s , Rick Cua called om me to write charts for Springhill Worship . It seemed that every Carl Cartee song that I charted , I wanted to lead in my church at the time . Many of his songs work so well with the Short-Cut Capo . I remember calling Rick to get Carl ’ s address so I could send him a capo . I recall when I finally got to meet Carl , it was at the Christian Musician Summit in Washington . I was telling him how much my church loved singing , “ Don ’ t Let Me Miss the Glory ” and

come to find out , he began writing that song while trying out the capo I sent him !
I love his song “ My Offering ”. The song is very simple to play with the Short-Cut Capo even though it uses the 3-minor chord ( Bm ). With this capo , the strings are still in standard tuning and so all your barre-chords are the same . It ’ s got a great rhythm and could fit at the beginning , middle or end of a worship set .
Don ’ t throw away songs just because they are not currently on the radio or permanently
