CAPO GUITAR
“ ALWAYS GOOD ” FROM NEW LIFE CORPUS | Mitch Bohannon
Last July , I featured a new song from a Florida worship leader , Chris Johnson , called “ This is Jesus .” I ’ ve been looking forward to featuring another worship song from a “ local church ” ever since then . A couple of weeks ago , my son-inlaw , Michael Bennett , sent me “ Always Good ”. It ’ s a brand-new song written by folks on his worship team and sung in his church , New Life Corpus Christi , TX . I knew immediately that I needed to share it .
“ Let every heart be thankful , Let every heart adore Him , Let every heart praise His name .” The chorus really grabbed my attention as we are currently planning for our Thanksgiving . As a worship leader , I ’ ve always been on the lookout for new songs that are able to fit into the specific seasons , but yet were solid worship tunes that could be used in the setlists throughout the year . This is one of those tunes .
It ’ s got great dynamics and the recording features both male and female lead parts that are really powerful . I love the melodic hook that starts the song and reappears in the turnaround after the first chorus . This is a great song to build by adding instruments and voices . With the added bridge option , the song can be shortened or extended based on how your congregation responds .
“ Always Good ” is extremely easy to play with the cut capo with only a handful of chord shapes . So , whether you ’ re leading alone or with a 3-piece or full band , there is plenty you can add to the song with your acoustic guitar and the cut capo .
You ’ ll see that I modify a couple of fingerings in the video ; I often play a “ B / D #” for when I play a B . It ’ s simple to do once you train your little finger to reach up to the 5 th string . If it ’ s uncomfortable to reach that “ D #” note , just leave it off . The Cut Capo “ B ” will cover just fine . I will also often finger only the 6 th string on my “ A ” chord shapes so as to mute the 5 th string . Doing this really brings up the clarity of the chord . New Life recorded the song in the key of “ Eb .” To play with the recording , you ’ ll need to tune down a half-step or you could play with a full capo on 6 and the cut capo on 7 and play using Cut Capo “ A-shapes ” ( email me if that ’ s what you want to do and I can send you a chart ).
