Example 6 : Sequenced 7 ' s 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 , 2-3-4-5-6-7-8 , 8-7-6-5-4-3-2 , 7-6-5-4-3-2-1
Now that you have seen a list of the basic sequencing exercises that focus on each sequence individually , let ’ s look at an approach that expands the size of the sequence with each iteration .
Example 7 demonstrates a way of sequencing the notes in our G Ionian pattern from Figure 1 starting with a two-note grouping and then increasing the size of each grouping by one scale degree for each iteration . This continues in an ascending and descending fashion until the complete three note per string pattern is played ascending and descending at the end of the exercise . Again , the exercise is played using the Figure 1 hand position without ever leaving that location on the fingerboard .
Example 7 : Expanding Sequence Exercise
As you play through this example , pay close attention to the sound of each individual sequence as it gets larger and larger , until ultimately the top of the fingering pattern is reached and then descends back down to the root . Now see if you can sing the exercise without the help of your bass . Look closely at the shape of the example on the staff . Notice how the placement of the notes
on the staff visually parallels the stepwise movement of the pitches on your fingerboard . It ' s okay if you can ' t see this right away . It takes some time to be able to ' sight sing ' effectively . Also try this approach with other scales and modes that you know and work to build your endurance with these extended exercises . Always remember that the goal is to effectively use shapes to refine your ear training so that your hands know to intuitively and spontaneously play what you hear in your head ! Until next time , have fun practicing !
