KIDS WORSHIP
IT ’ S A HOLLY JOLLY TIME OF YEAR TO WORSHIP | Yancy
‘ Tis the season for special events and breaking out of the normal routine of how we do church . I love the inspiration and the creativity that this time of year brings and how it so often makes us dig down deep to find and give our best . Even in all the hustle and bustle we can provide a way for families to stop , reflect and worship the Lord together . I love the Christmas season . There ’ s so much you can do to theme out your environment with decorations . Press play on festive music before and after class and within your service in your worship set . Even share a playlist with families and encourage parents to push play on songs they can sing and worship with together .
Plan a special family Christmas event . Let the evening support your other efforts in ministry . Use this night to underline the other things you ’ re doing . Are you helping parents teach their kids at home with an Advent devotional or activity ? Make this evening tie in to that . Are you supporting a missions or giving program ? Tie it in . Use the night as a launching point to begin something or start a new challenge for families .
Don ’ t be afraid to sing Christmas songs in your services ! We sing the same songs all year long . For a few weeks we get to mix it up . Choose to set aside our normal routine and make the season special . Even though it may take a little extra planning and rehearsal , take advantage of this opportunity to make your music time fresh by doing Christmas songs . A great way to mix fun and familiar is by using songs like “ Jingle Bells ” or “ Frosty the Snowman ” with kids . I know those songs don ’ t have anything to do with the real story of Christmas but they are fun . They encourage joy . These songs are familiar and are a great way to encourage participation within your kids . Then , take them a step farther . Create an atmosphere of worship with songs like “ Joy to the World ” and “ O Come All Ye Faithful .” These songs will enhance the messages you ’ re teaching because of how they tell the story and make it come alive . Help point hearts to focus on what this time is all about . Jesus is the reason for the season .
Remember to create dynamics in your worship sets . Think of a roller coaster as it climbs up and drops down . Those dynamics are what you want in your set . Go from something super fun and high energy to something soft and serious . It can be a great transition for your participants to keep them engaged and also give them rest breaks to sit down . As you build your song set , always take an aerial view and look at the whole picture . You ’ ll see and notice things you won ’ t see if you ’ re only focused on individual songs or moments . Keep an eye on how they connect together to make the whole .
Look up Luke 2:13-20 . I love how it tells us the angels and shepherds praised God ! There was a lot of worship happening in the Christmas story . We have been given the greatest gift ever . What a reason we have to sing and worship our Savior who was born . Take this Christmas season to communicate and illustrate worship in a different way then you ’ ve done this year . Our worship is a gift that we can give to God . He takes great delight in our gifts and offering of worship . Help your kids see that their worship is a gift they can give to the King !
In the same passage , verse 19 says : “ But Mary kept all these things like a secret treasure in her heart . She thought about them over and over .” What wisdom we can take to heart as we close out this year . Pause to reflect and remember the God stories you ’ ve encountered this year .
• What are the God moments for you of 2020 ?
• How did you experience God ’ s faithfulness and provision ?
• What were your favorite moments of leading children ’ s ministry worship this year ?
• Thinking ahead for 2021 . What is your vision for discipling kids in worship in the new year ? What are your goals ? How are you planning to lead your kids into a deeper relationship with Jesus ?
I encourage you to “ keep these things like a secret treasure in your heart ”. Think about them and remember them . As the new year begins don ’ t forget how God has blessed you and remained faithful to keep His promises !
