I don ’ t waste time trying to decide which compressor , or EQ , or mic pre , I want to use . Nowadays they ’ ve all come so far , it ’ s really hard to tell the difference or be able to match the difference with plug-ins . That ’ s my personal opinion for what I do .
My mic pre , I ’ m using a Universal Audio Apollo and I ’ m going into a Unison pre , and I use the API plug-in for that .
As far as gear I can ’ t live without , I really don ’ t have a ton of gear , so I would say that my sound library is the thing I cannot live without . I have a chronic addiction to sound libraries , especially string libraries , and any orchestral library for that matter . I think investing in sounds is so important , for me the sounds and the sound libraries are more crucial than gear because of the type of music that I personally make .
[ WM ] It ’ s my understanding that social media such as TicTok , are great for promoting bits of music . But my understanding is that once you post on them , they actually own the content . They don ’ t pay any money , and they consider that they own your content once posted , do you know anything about that ?
[ Tommee ] I don ’ t know a ton . I know there are a lot of things in the works . YouTube for instance pays out for the music people use . I think Instagram and Facebook are very close , and I ’ m not sure about TicTok , so I ’ m probably not educated enough to give an answer .
But I think that we will find a way to make it work , the same way we found a way to make streaming work , and it ’ s just going to involve shifting . I don ’ t know where this is all going to head , we have a lot more tools at our disposal than we even did ten years ago , so it ’ ll be interesting to watch and see how labels and musicians adapt to all of these social media applications .
