2020 . The pandemic . The election . The shutdowns . The unknown . The fear . The worry . Do you go a day without hearing the same topic , different complaint ? I don ’ t . The message of the times is quite complex , multi-layered . When I bought the new Gateway Worship record , See You Move – Acoustic Sessions , Vol . 2 , my frustration was eased by the simple message of Leeland ’ s I Have A Savior .
The simplicity of the chord progression balanced with the lyrics is a much-needed respite in times of turmoil and chaos . It seems that just as much as I ’ ve heard the above complaints , I ’ ve also heard the charge to the church to stand firm and minister to those struggling . However , as we all have had struggles of our own , I really believe that the message in this song is a needed reminder to the church of the Rock on which we stand !
Playing the song with the cut capo works really well . As per usual , Leeland ’ s key is much too high for me . For the video , I had my son-in-law , Michael Bennett sing . Michael is one of the worship leaders at Church Unlimited in Corpus Christi . For me to sing and lead this song , I would play the same chord fingerings , but move both of my capos down a step ( 2 frets ).
One of my favorite chord movements in this song is in the bridge stepping from the Gsus to the C2 / E to the Am . With the cut capo , the Gsus is all strings – no fingers … the C2 / E is one finger on the fifth string ( play that as the bass note ) and then to the Am shape . For the beginning of the song , I like to start with finger picking to keep it light and to really highlight the chord shapes of the cut capo . If you ’ re not used to picking with your fingers , a light strum like Michael is playing will work perfect .
