So, What Exactly Is an IR? IR stands for Impulse Response. Simply put, an IR is a digital snapshot of how a specific speaker cabinet, microphone, microphone placement, and recording chain respond to sound. Most guitar IRs are captured with close microphones, so room ambience is typically minimal. Think of it as preserving the sonic fingerprint of a professionally mic’ d guitar cabinet so it can be recreated digitally.
With an IR-based setup, your amplifier signal passes through a reactive load or amp simulator before cabinet simulation is applied. The resulting signal closely reproduces the sound of a professionally recorded guitar cabinet and can be sent directly to front-of-house, a recording interface, or an in-ear monitor system with remarkable consistency.
