Canaan Baca has a story to tell much like many worship leaders. Starting out young in the church, he has availed himself to opportunities in serving people, and God has blessed. He is a founder of One Voice Worship [ One Voice INT Music ]. His new album release, My Salvation, is a marvelous collection of congregationalfriendly songs, released through Capitol Christian Music Group.
[ Alex MacDougall ] Welcome Canaan! It is so good to meet you.
[ Canaan Baca ] It’ s great to meet you too!
[ WM ] Thank you for your time. You know, believe it or not, you and I could be related.
[ Canaan ] Really?
[ WM ] Yes, because my great-grandmother was a Baca from New Mexico.
[ Canaan ] Really? I’ ve got family in New Mexico.
[ WM ] When I was first asked to interview you, I thought, oh, that’ d be wild if we were actually related.
[ Canaan ] Yeah, that’ s crazy. It’ s so funny. I’ m going to write that down because that’ s where my grandpa grew up. We’ ve got family out there still. My grandma and grandpa met in New Mexico and then eventually moved to California. But yeah, we got a lot of ties out there. And so, if it’ s a Baca from New Mexico, we probably are related.
[ WM ] That’ s right. Well, it’ s great to meet you and thank you for taking this time today. Let’ s start with this. Tell us about your trek into leading worship.
[ Canaan ] Thank you for having me. It’ s great to meet you and I’ ve been excited to talk. But yeah, so I grew up as a pastor’ s kid in California. I was born in a suburb of Sacramento called Elk Grove, California. And then at five, I moved down to Lathrop, California, which is this tiny town in central California. And my parents were pastors of that church, a church of 25 people when we first came. And then that gradually grew. I’ ve experienced talking with a lot of other people that started leading worship young or serving in their churches. Serving in the smaller church is always a blessing, but especially when you’ re young because there’ s opportunity. And so, we needed a guitarist, so I learned how to play guitar and eventually made it. I played in kids’ church and then youth, and then eventually on Sunday mornings.
And I always loved to sing, so there was a need for it. I jumped in and helped our worship pastor, I learned how to sing tenor harmonies and play acoustic in time. And then it just kind of gradually grew from there. I mean, I felt called to ministry at the age of 12. There was a distinct
