I mean, just from the stream that we’ re in and theologically, we believe that the Holy Spirit is active and moving. Today we believe in the gifts of the spirit. We operate in that. And so that’ s just kind of innate in the environment that I grew up in. And so, I’ ve been familiarized with that, which is a gift from a young age. But I haven’ t really known much else where it’ s like we need God to show up or else I can’ t move you. I can’ t save you.
I can’ t heal you. We need him. And I’ ve found that even in, not a critique at all, that even in the midst of what some might call the seeker sensitive movement or attractional models, that sort of thing, again, these are all things that God can use as tools to meet people so they’ re not bad. But I’ m not afraid. We’ re not afraid. I’ m not afraid of things maybe feeling a little bit unusual or different. It’ s like if you’ re coming from the world, it’ s going to be weird anyway. You’ re going to hear the gospel, which is a man who is God came to this earth, died, resurrected, and he’ s coming back again. That’ s not normal anyway. So, there’ s power in the gospel and when we meet together when we lean into that, if it’ s real, that’ s all that matters. So, we go after the real movement of the Spirit, trusting that God’ s going to bring men unto himself and that he’ s going to move in our midst. And when it’ s real, it’ s undeniable. We’ ve seen the fruit of that in our church. There are people that are far from the Lord, never grew up with any context of Christianity or really opposed to it come and they meet people that genuinely carry God’ s presence and his love and they’ re captured by that. And then they come and join his people in the service.
It’ s like, wait, there’ s something different about this because it’ s powerful.
[ WM ] Absolutely! Let me ask another question I got for you before we get into the album. I love the fact that your church is celebrating its 100th anniversary. And it seems like so often many old churches simply age and then turn inward and then fade away. But your church doesn’ t seem that way. Tell us about that.
[ Canaan ] Yeah. I’ m very blessed to be coming into a part of something that’ s existed for a long time and that God has used for many, many people in this area. I mean, so our church started, just bullet points and cut me off whenever … I can do long-winded. Our church started in a bicycle shop in downtown Renton, Washington, which is just over the water from Seattle. It started with two sisters. They began this basically kids’ ministry for the local neighborhood to share the gospel with kids and take care of them and feed them. And it developed into a church. And so, fastforward a hundred years in September, and it’ s just continued to grow and evolve. And yeah, I mean, God’ s favor’ s been on it. And the leadership across the way, I mean, to your point, our lead pastor got saved here. He was from a very broken, dysfunctional family.
The church became his family. The pastors became basically his father, and he was raised
