Mike Fortin is one of those genius guys who has had a lifetime career building and modifying guitar amps, pedals, and, more recently, digital amps, pedal emulations, and IRs, working with companies like Neural DSP, Replicant Audio, Two Notes Audio and Synergy Amps.
He’ s highly revered for his ability to get killer Hard Rock and Metal tones, and we Worship guys are just realizing we’ re missing out on some really cool gear! The Fortin FOURTEEN Dual Boost Overdrive is a culmination of three of Mike’ s most coveted modded pedal designs.
OUT OF THE BOX: FOURTEEN ships safely in a black box with the words“ Tone you can FEEL” printed on it. Inside, it’ s protected by a velvet drawstring bag. The metal casing is coated with a classic green metalflake. The pedal is basically three pedal circuits in one. You can choose to access any two of them via the left footswitch. On top are six black knobs. They are arranged in two parallel rows: Drive, Tone, and Level. Below them are two 3-way mini-switches. Here, you choose between one of the three circuits for each of the two channels. Left switch position is the Fortin Hexdrive, middle position is the F9( a Modded TS-9), and right position is the F808( a modded TS808). There’ s a channel One / Two footswitch on the left, and on the right, an On / Bypass footswitch. Both have LED indicators. Red / Green for channel switching and Green for on / off. On the right side of the pedal is a ¼ inch Amp channel switch, with two mini-slide switches. One switch for polarity and one to assign the amp to either of the two channels. On back are ¼ inch In and Out with a typical 9vDC jack, and it only needs 115ma. The pedal feels sturdy and hefty.
IN USE: The FOURTEEN has a straightforward and logical layout. Two parallel sets of knobs are easy to navigate and decide which of the three circuits you want on either channel. Starting with the Hexdrive, this is one of Mike Fortin’ s original circuits. This circuit is the perfect choice for a clean boost, gradually adding hair as you turn up the Drive. I’ ve learned that most hard rock guys rely a lot on the amp tube saturation. Hitting the input hard is one of the keys to a great tone.
