generation, but we don’ t often talk about the nations and that God actually has a heart for all the nations. So, it’ s been really great having a song again that establishes that as the lyrics says, that He reigns over all the earth. He doesn’ t just reign over America. Or the U. K. And he doesn’ t not reign over China or Russia or Ukraine. He reigns over the whole earth.
It’ s a very important thing to be reminded of theologically, that the God we serve, He’ s a global God and that He holds the whole world in his hand. And so, it’ s been great singing that … it sort of ignites something new in people. [ WM ] Those are really good words, Martin. On a personal note, as worshipers, we need to be able to sing MY God reigns to give our corporate voice more integrity. At least that’ s what I thought about when I first listened to this, and I’ ll get into this in a bit, but you’ ve gone through hardship. I remember the auto accident that you were involved in. I’ ve gone through stage four cancer. So, my God reigns is not just my opinion, but it is my perspective. When you have perspective, it means everything to what you are singing or saying because you’ ve gone through it.
[ Martin ] Yeah. Yeah.
[ WM ] What can you tell us about the song and how its writing came about with Cody and Chris? [ Martin ] Yes. I was sitting in my house in England thinking, do you know what? I am now hearing the chorus of this song. This is 20 years old now.
We( Delirious) recorded it as a band. It was a protest song really, if you ever listened to the original verses. It was kind of a protest song reminding the church that we have responsibility socially, et cetera. But of course, it never made its way into the mainstream church because you can’ t really put those lyrics on a screen in a family service. So, I was sitting there thinking, everyone’ s doing the chorus of this song, Upper Room, Passion, Tomlin, all these movements. Our God Reigns( sings). And I was thinking, wouldn’ t it be amazing if we could actually reintroduce it as a whole new song with some verses and a new middle? So, I texted Cody and Chris Tomlin and I said,“ Hey, are you up for this”? I’ m coming to Nashville. This was back in February, I think of this year.
I’ m coming in, can we get a morning and try and see what happens? And it was miraculous. I would say. Everyone uses dramatic terms for like,“ Oh, we had this amazing day, and the heavens opened, and God gave us this song.” And over all the years of songwriting, every now and again, you do have a moment like that, but
